Sizing: NZ 4 - 32 size range. Unfortunately, we are unable to grade size extensions to our patterns at the moment, due to resource restrictions in our HQ team. If you have any questions relating to sizing or size extensions, please get in touch.
Poppy is offered in full length (View A) and in mid length (View B). We recommend referring to both the garment measurements and the body measurements when selecting a size, regardless of what size you wear in ready-to-wear clothing. Remember to consider what you will be wearing underneath your coat when choosing your size. A hand made coat is a considerable investment and a garment that is designed for maximum longevity in your wardrobe. We strongly recommend sewing a toile (sample garment) in a calico fabric (or similar) prior to cutting your final coat. This will ensure you have the opportunity to make any alterations in length or fit to the coat pattern using an inexpensive fabric. Sewing a toile requires additional time, but we consider this time well spent for a project of this type.
Sewing level: Advanced.

Body Measurements

Make by TFS sizing is based on NZ women’s garment sizes. The Poppy Coat is an oversized fit with significant volume throughout the body and raglan sleeve, and has a low armhole. As noted above, we highly recommend you make up a toile to check your size and the amount of volume before you cut into your final fabric. If you prefer less volume, you may wish to size down.

Fabric Yield Recommendations

Recommended Fabric + Supplies

Main Fabric
The Poppy Coat is designed for medium-heavy weight woven fabrics such as wool and wool blends, in coating, melton or boucle styles. The Poppy Coat would also sew up beautifully in medium weight wovens like denim or gabardine. When choosing your fabric, don’t forget to consider what you intend to pair your coat with and how you will clean it when required.

Lining Fabric
The Poppy Coat is fully lined and careful consideration should be made when choosing a lining fabric to ensure that it will not interfere with the drape of your main fabric. The Poppy Coat will work well with acetate, cupro, silk satin or twill, or rayon lining fabrics. Take care to ensure your lining option is not too lightweight as slippage may occur at the seams.

Toiling Fabric
Calico can be purchased for toiling purposes here.

Interfacing
Interfacing is recommended for selected pattern pieces. Choose a woven interfacing in a weight appropriate for the fabric you are using.

Thread
You will need at least two spools of thread for straight stitching your coat outer, and an additional thread to match your lining fabric (if using a different colour).

Buttons
The Poppy Coat requires one 30mm button for the front closure.

Tools
The Poppy Coat can be completed with a regular domestic sewing machine, with a buttonhole function. If your machine does not have a buttonhole function, you can usually get buttonholes done at a garment alterations store. You will also require an iron, tailor’s chalk, a point turner, a ruler, a sharp pair of sewing scissors, a hand sewing needle and pins. A fuse press will be helpful for block fusing your interfacing, if you have access to one. Alternatively, you can use your iron to apply your interfacing and we highly recommend testing this out before you start.
